3D Newspaper Sculpture

My first class as a WASH student was a great experience. - We were given a problem, and a task to go along with that problem. We were asked to build a structure using only newspaper and glue that could support a cinder block. The obvious problem was that the cinder block was exptremly heavy.

How I went about this project. - I began to test the news paper on how thick it would be when I folded it how easly it would tear, and how much I had. after coming to the conclusion and spending very little time thinking outside the box, i began to fold the newspaper into thick strips and stack them like the block stacked in the game Jenga. Considering that we had two hours and thirty minutes to constuct our projects, i was confedent that i would be able to fold enough newspaper to at least get three or four foot tall. I soon realized that was not going to happen.

Although I did not get the four foot tower I had invisioned, the foot and a half foot tall stack of paper had developed a spring to it. As the project contined, my drive shifted from seeing how high i could lift the cinder block to how far I could launch it into the atmosphere.

When all was said and done, and the cinder block sat on my paper spring, I was at a solid 7 inches.

This was a fun project and I'm eager to see what other projects are ahead.
